BEFIT Program Set to Transform Literacy and Numeracy in Likoma
A new era in education is dawning for Likoma as the Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) program prepares to launch in January 2025.
This transformative initiative, owned and led by the Ministry of education will enable learners in all public primary schools in Malawi, approximately 6000, to learn using tablets specifically those in standards 1 to 4. The main purpose of the BEFIT program is to improve primary school learners’ literacy and numeracy skills
Ulalo is part of the consortium supporting the implementation of this transformative program and in corroboration with Likoma Education officials a series of entry level meetings have already sparked hope in the island district.
During a District Executive Committee meeting (DEC), Chief Education Officer for Likoma James Zimba expressed his optimism for the program’s potential to transform education in Likoma.
“We are excited to see the BEFIT program roll out in our Island, It is an incredible opportunity to uplift education standards and give our learners a strong foundation,” said Zimba.
The program has already made a nationwide impact, with over 81,000 tablets distributed to 681 primary schools. The Government of Malawi aims to reach all primary schools by 2029, ensuring that every young learner benefits from this innovative approach to education.
All the ten Public Primary schools in Likoma are expected to roll out BEFIT in January.
BEFIT is being implemented by the Ministry of Education through the Directorate of Open Distance and E-learning (DoDEL) and Directorate of Basic Education (DBE).
As the BEFIT program takes root in Likoma, the excitement is intense. This initiative promises not only to revolutionise education but also to unlock brighter futures for the children of Malawi.
