From Training to Triumph, Waterpoint Committee Takes Charge of Clean Water

The local water committee members demonstrate teamwork as they carefully remove heavy rods during the borehole maintenance training

In a significant step towards sustainable development, the Waterpoint Committee in Yobe Sambo village has successfully completed their practical training sessions. The training, conducted by Ulalo, is designed to empower local community members with the skills needed to operate and maintain the new borehole recently installed in the area.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance water accessibility and improve living conditions in rural communities. The training has equipped the Waterpoint Committee with vital knowledge and hands-on experience to ensure the long-term functionality of the borehole, which is crucial for providing clean water to the village.

Kamwana Kamanga, the Assistant Community Development Officer, praised the impact of the training. “This training is a game-changer for Yobe Sambo,” Kamanga said. “It not only provides the community with the tools they need to maintain their water source but also empowers them to take ownership of this vital resource. The skills and confidence gained during these sessions will have a lasting effect on the health and well-being of the villagers.”

Ommie Chavula, a member of the Waterpoint Committee, expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm following the training. “Before this training, we had limited knowledge about maintaining the borehole,” Chavula explained. “Now, we feel more confident and capable. We know how to handle any issues that arise and ensure that everyone in our village has access to clean water. It’s a huge relief and a significant improvement for our community.”

With smiles all around, Ommie Chavula connects rods during the borehole maintenance training.

The borehole  is  a testament to the collaborative efforts between Ulalo, International Project AID (IPA), and the 22 high school students from Kantonsschule Wohlen, Switzerland whose  contributions have made sustainable water access a reality for Yobe Sambo.
