Ulalo Engages Globally at UNGA 2023

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is an annual gathering of world leaders and influencers, where critical global issues are discussed and solutions are sought. While UNGA itself is a powerful platform, its sidelines offer a unique opportunity for individuals and organizations to collaborate, share ideas, and work towards a brighter future. This year, Ulalo's Founder and Executive Director, James Gondwe, had the privilege of attending UNGA 2023 and participating in several key side events.

One of the standout events during UNGA was the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Meeting 2023, organized by the Clinton Foundation. CGI brings together leaders from the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to address pressing global challenges. This year's agenda included topics such as climate change, health equity, economic growth, the global refugee crisis, and gender equality. Ulalo was not just a participant but also received an invitation to make a commitment for 2024, a testament to the organization's remarkable work.

James described his experience at CGI as "an eye-opener." He had the privilege of meeting numerous influential figures dedicated to making a positive impact globally. The event was a melting pot of changemakers and visionaries, all gathered with a common goal of effecting change on a grand scale. During the event, James witnessed a historic moment when His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of Malawi, took the stage alongside former U.S. President Bill Clinton. It was a powerful testament to the global collaboration needed to address today's challenges.

Breakfast with African Visionaries: Building Camaraderie for Change

Meet with Barry Segal

Another remarkable event on James's UNGA journey was the "Breakfast with African Visionaries" organized by the Segal Family Foundation and the King Baudouin Foundation USA. This gathering brought together doers and donors in an atmosphere of camaraderie, away from the typical donor pitch sessions. James appreciated the opportunity to connect with fellow African visionaries, both those he already knew and new acquaintances. It was also a chance to engage with potential funders who share Ulalo's vision.

He was particularly thrilled with the relaxed and collaborative vibe of the event. Instead of intense negotiations, the focus was on building meaningful connections and partnerships to further the cause of positive change in Africa and beyond. A standout moment was when James had a photo opportunity with Barry Segal, the philanthropist behind the Segal Family Foundation, an organization known for its impactful support of social change initiatives.

Friends of Malawi Gathering: Fostering Connections and Conversations

As UNGA 2023 drew to a close, the "Friends of Malawi Gathering" organized by the Chandler Foundation and Segal Family Foundation was the perfect way to round off the experience. For James, it was an opportunity to connect with fellow Malawians and kickstart conversations that would undoubtedly continue back home. This gathering not only celebrated the rich Malawian culture but also laid the foundation for collaborative efforts to uplift the nation.
