Ulalo at the 28th Annual Internet GovernanCE FORUM

Ulalo is joining the 18th annual Internet Governance Forum, under the overarching theme “Internet We Want – Empowering All People”, taking place from 8-12 Oct 2023 in a hybrid format, accommodating participants onsite in Kyoto, Japan, and online.

Ulalo is represented by our Founder and Executive Director James Gondwe onsite at the Kyoto International Conference Centre.

Established by the United Nations Secretary-General in 2006, the Internet Governance Forum serves to bring people together from various stakeholder groups as equals, in discussions on public policy issues relating to the Internet. Learn more about IGF here.

A big shout out to partners the World Association of Christian Communications and the  Association for Progressive Communications (APC) for making our in-person participation possible.

At the Internet Governance Forum, Ulalo will actively join and participate in various sessions on digital inclusion, meaningful access agenda, and public policy discussions, specifically on Edtech and community networks.

Notable sessions

Agents of Inclusion: Community Networks and Media Meet-up

Sunday, 8th October at 14:00-16:00 JST
WS 2 – Room A

Our Founder and Executive Director James Gondwe – will be speaking at this session.

The meet-up will bring together local community champions eager to share their learnings and practical solutions for a truly inclusive digital world. Practitioners from ten community-centered projects of the Global Majority – some of them on-site, others joining virtually – will explore digital inclusion along the “4C Framework”: What does it mean to design computing, connectivity, content, and (human) capacity with local community members in the driver’s seat? What does it take to customize and sustain crucial hardware and software on a local level? How can offline networks and global access models be combined to serve community needs? Where does the platform economy end and reliable content creation start? What capacities and shared resources are key to living up to digital rights?

Our founder and Executive Director, James Gondwe will share multiple issues from how providing digitized content of school curricula, quality education is expanded to remote areas and to best practices on Policy engagements for the creation of conducive licensing, regulatory, and financing framework for community networks in bridging the divide derived from our “Catalyzing Better Policy, Regulatory and Financing framework for Community Networks in Malawi” implemented in partnership with the ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM), Mzuzu University – ICT Department (Mzuni ICT), and UmozaNet. This project is co-funded by the World Association of Christian Communications, with the support of Bread for the World-Germany and the  Association for Progressive Communications (APC) under their Connecting the Unconnected initiative.
