As we commemorate the International Girls in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) day, themed 'Leadership,' it's a moment not just to acknowledge technological advancements but also to celebrate the leaders propelling innovation in this domain.

Today, Our communications team had the privilege of sitting down with Doreen Luhanga our Technical Lead, an exemplar of leadership in the ICT sector.

She generously shared her journey, insights, and aspirations as a female leader in technology.

JOURNEY TO LEADERSHIP:

Doreen's path to becoming a technical lead is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Starting her academic journey in computer engineering at University of Livingstonia, she initially joined Ulalo as an ICT admin. However, it was her introduction to Educational Technology that ignited her fervor for leveraging technology in enhancing teaching and learning experiences. With dedication and continuous learning, she ascended to a leadership role, where she now advises on adopting cutting-edge technologies for maximum impact in educational technology.

 INSPIRATION AND CAREER CHOICE:

From a young age, Doreen's fascination with technology, particularly computers, was amazing. Her journey into graphic design eventually led her to explore various other facets of technology, solidifying her decision to pursue computer engineering. For her, technology wasn't just a career choice; it was an embodiment of her interests and aspirations.

“My interest in technology started at a very young age... It encompassed all my interests and even more.”

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES:

Navigating the male-dominated landscape of ICT presented its own set of challenges for Doreen. Despite possessing ample experience and expertise, doubts about her abilities often surfaced. However, she tackled these obstacles head-on, relying on her confidence and resilience to prove her worth time and again.

"Being a woman in a male-dominant field like ICT is always challenging... You just have to be confident in your ability and always rise to the occasion when need be."

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING TECH WOMEN LEADERS:

Doreen's advice for girls  aspiring to leadership roles in technology is simple yet profound: never stop learning and be courageous. In a dynamic field like technology, continuous self-improvement is key, alongside the confidence to assert one's abilities in the face of adversity.

"Never stop learning, always make time to develop your knowledge... Your knowledge and confidence will come in handy."

STAYING UPDATED:

Remaining abreast of the latest trends and developments in the tech industry is crucial, and Doreen emphasizes the importance of staying connected with fellow professionals, attending conferences, and actively seeking out tech news. In an era dominated by social media, leveraging these platforms for information dissemination is indispensable.

"It is important to stay connected with other professionals in the tech industry... But what is important is to be deliberate in improving your knowledge."

  BALANCING EXPERTISE AND LEADERSHIP:

For Doreen, balancing technical expertise with leadership responsibilities involves mastering the art of delegation and honing effective communication skills. By delegating tasks, she can focus more on her leadership roles while ensuring that technical aspects are efficiently managed. 

"Learning to delegate has helped in balancing the two... Having good communication skills has also been beneficial for a leadership role."
