International Youth Day 2023: Empowering youth for a sustainable Malawi

Every year, the International Youth Day (IYD) is celebrated on 12th August 2023. In Malawi, the IYD 2023 was celebrated in Mzuzu, on the 18th of August 2023. Ulalo, joined the Ministry of Youth and Sports and other stakeholders to organize the International Youth Day at Mzuzu Stadium. This year, the International Youth Day was commemorated under the theme "Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World." The event was nothing short of spectacular, graced by the presence of His Excellency, the Vice President of Malawi, Dr. Klaus Saulos Chilima.

The event was characterized by a myriad of activities that showcased the extraordinary talents and skills of young individuals. There were pavilions demonstrating activities and innovations in line with the theme including: soap production to briquette manufacturing, cutting-edge ICT innovations to captivating performances in poems, music, dance, and drama. Young people were not just exhibiting their prowess; they were demonstrating how their skills could be harnessed for the socio-economic development of the country.

Honourable Uchizi Mkandawire, the Minister of Youth, delivered a powerful message at the event. He emphasized the importance of collaboration in youth empowerment. The minister recognized that the youth of Malawi hold immense potential, and to unlock it, they need access to quality skills education and soft loans that can propel them into entrepreneurial ventures. It's a vision that doesn't just benefit the youth; it has the potential to drive the country's economy to new heights.

The Guest of Honour, Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima, brought an even broader perspective to the forefront. He stressed the critical need to invest in green skills for the youth if Malawi is to achieve meaningful and sustainable development. Dr. Chilima's words resonated deeply, as he underscored the youth-centered nature of Malawi's vision for 2063. He called for equipping the youth with diverse production skills, creating an enabling environment for business and networking, and involving them in decision-making processes. In essence, he emphasized that the youth are not just the future; they are the driving force behind a better Malawi today and tomorrow.
